Pull a cord, leaf or star and a calm melody starts to play. You hang it up with a ring or loop, for example on the pram, the playpen or the car seat. A musical hanger works the same way. Some versions play their melody on batteries. A short bedtime routine helps your little one relax: a clean nappy, pyjamas on, a cuddle, a tune from the music box and then to bed. Play the melody at the same moment every evening. After a while your baby recognises it as the sign that it's time to sleep. A soft comforter can also become a familiar part of the routine.

Music and your baby

Babies respond to sound and rhythm from a very young age. A calm song can comfort, and many babies go quiet as soon as they hear a familiar melody. You can also use the music as the start of a moment together: hum along, rock gently or talk about what you see. That way your little one hears not only music but also your voice, which is still the nicest sound of all. As your child gets older, they start pulling the cord themselves and discover that something happens. A lovely first lesson in cause and effect.

Safe use

A musical toy is a toy, so use it safely. A baby sleeps safest on their back, in a cot without cuddly toys, pillows or loose items. So hang a music box on the outside of the playpen or cot, out of your baby's reach, or remove it as soon as your little one is asleep. Make sure cords, loops and rings can never reach your baby's face or neck. Check the toy regularly for loose seams or parts, and always keep battery compartments securely closed.

Care

Spot-clean the Skip Hop musical hanger and the Jitter Owl with a damp cloth; do not submerge them.
