What is a baby hooded towel?

A hooded towel, also called a bath cape, is a square towel with a hood in one corner. You put the hood over your baby's head and wrap the rest around their body. That keeps the head warm, where babies lose a lot of heat, and your little one is fully wrapped up in no time. That makes it handier than an ordinary towel, which keeps slipping off.

Which material should you choose?

Cotton and terry

Cotton is soft, sturdy and absorbs moisture well. The BimbiDreams towels are 100% cotton and about 100 x 100 cm, suitable from newborn to 3 years and washable at 30 °C. The Jollein terry version (75 x 75 cm) can be washed at 40 °C. The 100 x 100 cm Jollein Rainbow towels have a jersey cotton outside and a soft inside.

Bamboo

The Babyono towels are made of 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. Bamboo feels silky soft, absorbs a lot of moisture and is kind to delicate baby skin. They come in 76 x 76 cm and 100 x 100 cm, with a blue polar bear, grey foxes or a pink unicorn.

Organic cotton

Prefer organic cotton? Then the Pippi Babywear towels (83 x 83 cm, in Mineral Yellow, Violet Ice, Old Rose and Celestial Blue) and the Fixoni Infinity towels (80 x 80 cm) are a lovely choice.

Muslin

Which size?

• 75 to 80 cm: great for newborns and young babies, easy to handle.
• 83 to 90 cm: a handy in-between size that grows with your baby for a while.
• 100 x 100 cm: big enough to wrap your child up completely until about three.

Many parents choose a large size because it lasts longer. For a newborn, a smaller size can be a little handier.

A lovely bath routine

1. Lay the towel out ready before you put your baby in the bath, with the hood at the top.
2. Lift your baby out of the bath and lay them straight on the towel, with their head in the hood.
3. Fold the sides and bottom around your baby and pat their body dry.
4. Do not forget the skin folds, such as in the neck, under the arms and between the legs.
5. Apply a little baby oil or cream if you like and dress your baby warmly.

Keeping warm after the bath

Babies cool down quickly when they are wet. So make sure the bathroom is nice and warm before you start, and lay everything out ready: the towel, a clean nappy, a bodysuit and clothes. That way your baby does not have to wait while you search. Keep the bath short, especially with a newborn, and dry your little one well straight away. Is your baby a bit older and loves the water? Then bath time can last a bit longer, as long as they do not get cold.

Swimming and holidays

Going to baby swimming or the beach with your little one? Take a thin, quick-drying towel, for example muslin. It fits easily in the bag and dries again after an hour in the sun. For home, choose a thicker one that feels extra warm and soft.

Washing a hooded towel

Wash a new hooded towel a few times before using it: it becomes softer and absorbs moisture better. Check the label for the right temperature: many can be washed at 30 or 40 °C, the Jollein muslin one even at 60 °C. Use a mild detergent and preferably no fabric softener, as it makes the fabric less absorbent. Always let it dry well after use so it stays fresh.
