Soft leather slippers with a cheerful animal on top, handmade in Germany: that is Orangenkinder. The baby slippers are made of breathable, vegetable-tanned and chrome-free nappa leather, so little feet feel almost as if they are walking barefoot. At Tiny Giggles you will find the leather baby slippers by Orangenkinder with an owl, fox, kitten, bird, bee or dinosaur, in sizes 18/19 and 20/21.
Orangenkinder was founded by Verena, a mother who was looking for baby shoes that were both ecological and beautiful. For almost 18 years now, the slippers have been made by hand, with great attention to detail, in Franconia, in the Bavarian town of Oberreichenbach near Herzogenaurach. The factory is housed in a former PUMA hall. The brand works under socially fair and ecological conditions: truly made in Germany.
Orangenkinder only uses vegetable-tanned, chrome-free leather from Germany, from IVN-certified tanneries. The leather is uncoated and is tested and processed according to strict ecological guidelines. That makes it breathable and soft, and it fits around the feet like a second skin without restricting growth. Because the leather is not sealed with a plastic layer, you may see small natural marks, such as a scar or a slightly different texture. That makes every pair a little different.
The leather of most Orangenkinder slippers carries the ECARF seal. ECARF is a European foundation that researches allergies. The seal sets strict limits on substances such as formaldehyde, nickel and cobalt in leather processing. Chrome-tanned leather is not used at all by Orangenkinder. That is good news, because chrome allergy is a contact allergy many people have without knowing it. So the slippers are suitable for sensitive baby and children's feet.
Every pair has its own animal friend, with a little story to go with it:
All slippers are made entirely by hand. A hand-sewn elastic around the ankle keeps them from slipping off little feet, while older children can easily slip them on and off themselves.
The soft leather slippers are ideal for crawling and learning to walk. Little feet can move freely and feel the surface, just like walking barefoot. At the same time, the feet are protected and stay nice and warm on a cold floor. They are lovely for babies who aren't crawling yet too: the feet stay warm in the playpen or on a play mat.
Baby feet are still soft and grow quickly, so it is good if they can move as freely as possible. Leather slippers are supple and light, so your child feels the floor and can simply use their toes. Thanks to the elastic, they stay on better than socks, which often slide off while crawling. And because the leather breathes, feet are less likely to get too warm. With a cheerful animal on top, they quickly become a favourite: many little ones proudly point at their owl, fox or dinosaur.
The Orangenkinder slippers come in two sizes:
Not sure? Then measure your child's foot. Place the foot on a piece of paper and trace around it with a pen. Measure the longest distance from the heel to the big toe and add 12 to 17 mm. Also measure the width at the widest point, at the ball of the foot, and add 2 to 4 mm. Preferably measure at the end of the day, when feet are at their widest.
Orangenkinder tries to avoid waste as much as possible. Leftover leather is turned into doll shoes or key rings, cardboard boxes are reused wherever possible and there is no unnecessary packaging. For the colours, the brand uses harmless synthetic dyes, because plant-based colours are not lightfast and fade quickly. That keeps the cheerful colours looking good for a long time. In addition, the leather is regularly and critically tested for heavy metals and other substances.
Because the leather is uncoated, it can get small marks and signs of wear; that is part of natural leather. Gently wipe off dirt with a slightly damp cloth and let the slippers dry at room temperature, not on the radiator. That keeps the leather supple. Store them in a dry place, and now and then check that the elastic still closes nicely around the ankle.
A pair of Orangenkinder slippers is an original and sustainable newborn gift or present for a first birthday. Choose size 18/19 for a baby and 20/21 for a little one who is almost walking. Combine them with a pair of socks or something from our baby clothing, and have the present wrapped with our gift-wrapping service. You will find more ideas under gifts.
Take a look at all our shoes, or go straight to girls' shoes or boys' shoes. For sunny days there is a kids' hat, and you will find more fun extras under accessories and clothing.
