A soft, well-fitting sheet is the foundation of every baby bed. At Tiny Giggles you will find baby sheets for the crib, the cot and the travel cot: fitted sheets, cot sheets, crib sheets and waterproof molton fitted sheets. They are made of soft materials such as organic cotton, bamboo and jersey, from brands such as BimbiDreams, Bamboom, Jollein, Meyco and Babyono. Below you can read which sheet fits which bed, which size you need and how to make the bed safely.
Which baby sheets are there?
- Fitted sheets: with elastic all around, so the sheet sits tightly around the mattress. The most commonly used type for babies.
- Cot sheets: a flat sheet of about 110 x 140 cm for the cot, from Bamboom with a pillowcase.
- Crib sheets: a flat sheet of about 75 x 100 cm for the crib or pram, also with a pillowcase.
- Waterproof fitted sheets and mattress protectors: to protect the mattress from a leaking nappy or a little accident.
Which size do you need?
Always measure your mattress first. A sheet should fit tightly around the mattress, without folds or loose fabric. The most common sizes:
- 40 x 75 cm: for a travel crib, such as the Babyono fitted sheets in bamboo jersey.
- 40 x 80 cm: for the crib, such as the BimbiDreams fitted sheets and the Bamboom crib fitted sheets in a 2-pack.
- 60 x 120 cm: for a standard cot, from BimbiDreams, Bamboom and Jollein.
- 70 x 140 cm: for a larger cot or junior bed, from BimbiDreams among others.
The brands
- BimbiDreams: fitted sheets in organic cotton, plain or with themes such as Happy, Happy Days, Planet, Cottage and Wonderland. Also knitted, and a 3-piece crib set with flat sheet, fitted sheet and pillowcase.
- Bamboom: fitted sheets in organic bamboo jersey, and cot and crib sheets in bamboo and cotton, in prints such as Papavero, Magnolia and Eucalyptus.
- Jollein: jersey fitted sheets in soft pink, also in a 2-pack, and a waterproof terry fitted sheet.
- Meyco: waterproof molton fitted sheets and a studded mattress protector.
- Babyono: fitted sheets in bamboo jersey for the travel crib.
Which material do you choose?
Organic cotton is soft, breathable and grown without chemical pesticides. Jersey is a supple, slightly stretchy fabric, which makes a fitted sheet easy to put around the mattress. Bamboo feels silky soft and absorbs moisture well. Molton is a thick, soft cotton fabric that Meyco combines with a waterproof PU layer. That keeps the mattress dry while the sheet still breathes.
Making the bed safely
- Tight sheet: make sure the fitted sheet sits well around the mattress and can't shift.
- Nothing loose in bed: in the first year, don't put a pillow, duvet, cuddly toys or cot bumper in the bed.
- Sleeping bag: a well-fitting baby sleeping bag is the safest way to keep your baby covered. If you do use a sheet and blanket, place your baby with the feet against the foot of the bed and tuck everything in firmly, up to chest height.
- Pillowcase for later: the Bamboom cot and crib sheets come with a pillowcase. Only use a pillow once your child is older than one year.
Changing the bed quickly
Changing a wet bed in the middle of the night goes faster with a handy trick: lay two layers on top of each other. First a waterproof protector with a fitted sheet, and on top a second waterproof protector with a fitted sheet. If the top layer is wet, you remove it in one go and a clean bed is ready straight away. That way your baby is dry again quickly and everyone can go back to sleep. Keep clean sheets and a spare sleeping bag ready in the changing unit.
How many sheets do you need?
Babies spit up, sometimes leak through their nappy and sweat at night. That's why it's handy to have several sheets. Count on three to four fitted sheets per bed: one on the bed, one in the wash and a few in reserve. A waterproof fitted sheet or mattress protector under the regular sheet protects the mattress, so you only have to change the sheet.
Washing and care
Always wash new sheets before using them. Most BimbiDreams sheets are washed at 30 °C, the Jollein and Babyono fitted sheets at 40 °C. The Meyco molton fitted sheets are washable at a high temperature, and the studded mattress protector at 40 °C. Always check the label for each sheet. Use a mild detergent and preferably no fabric softener, so the sheet keeps absorbing moisture well.
From crib to cot
Most babies sleep in a crib or bedside crib for the first months, then move to a cot. So first choose sheets in the size of the crib, and buy sheets for the cot later. When travelling or at grandma and grandpa's, a fitted sheet for the travel crib is handy, so your baby sleeps on a familiar sheet there too.
Complete the bed
Sheets are the foundation, but there's more for a cosy bed. For older children you'll find lovely duvet covers, and everything for the bed under bed textiles. A cot bumper is only meant as decoration and doesn't belong in the bed while your baby sleeps. More for the nursery is under kids room.
A practical baby gift
Sheets are a practical baby gift that parents really use. Ask which bed they have, so you choose the right size. A set of fitted sheets in a lovely print, or a crib sheet with a pillowcase for later, is always welcome. We are happy to gift-wrap your present.

Frequently asked questions about baby sheets
What's the difference between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet?
A fitted sheet has elastic all around and sits tightly around the mattress. A flat sheet is flat and is used, for example, as a top sheet.
Which sheet size fits a cot?
A standard cot usually has a mattress of 60 x 120 cm. There are also cots of 70 x 140 cm. Always measure your mattress.
Do I need a waterproof sheet?
It's handy: a waterproof fitted sheet or mattress protector keeps the mattress dry in case of a leaking nappy.
