Why do babies drool so much?
Drooling is completely normal. From around three months, the salivary glands get busy, while your baby cannot swallow well yet. Once the first teeth come through, it often gets even more. The saliva runs over the chin to the neck and soaks bodysuits and tops. A wet collar does not feel nice and can irritate delicate skin. A drool bib catches it, so you do not have to change your baby's clothes all the time.

Bandana bibs
A bandana bib is shaped like a triangular neckerchief. It fits snugly around the neck, catches the drool exactly where it is needed and looks cute with the outfit too. You will find:

How many drool bibs do you need?
A baby who drools a lot can easily need three to five bibs a day. A supply of six to ten is therefore handy: that way you always have a few clean ones while the rest are in the wash. Sets of two or three make it easy to build up a supply quickly.
What should you look for?
- Material: cotton and muslin are soft and absorb moisture well. A waterproof back keeps clothes extra dry.
- Fastening and fit: the bib should fit well, but not tightly around the neck.
- Size and age: check the age stated on the product. Some sets are suitable from birth, others from 6 months.
- Washing: most bibs can be machine washed at 30 or 40 °C, the Jollein ones even at 60 °C.
- Style: a bandana bib is also a cute accessory. Choose a print that goes with your baby's clothes.
Safe use
Your baby should only wear a bib while awake and while you are around. Always take the bib off when your baby goes to sleep, including for a nap in the pram or car seat. That way the bib cannot slide around the neck or over the face. Also check regularly that press studs and seams are still secure.
Tips for sensitive skin
- Change the bib as soon as it is wet. A wet bib on the skin can actually cause irritation.
- Gently pat the mouth and chin dry now and then with a soft cloth.
- Wash new bibs before first use.
- Use a mild detergent and preferably no fabric softener, so the fabric stays absorbent.
Drooling and teething
Lots of drooling often coincides with the first teeth coming through. Your baby then puts everything in their mouth. A teether or teething toy brings relief, and with pacifier clips the dummy does not get lost so quickly. Muslin cloths are also handy to keep within reach.
