Looking for a cheerful nursery rug? A soft rug makes the room warmer and cosier straight away, and gives your child a lovely place to play. In this collection you will find animal-shaped rugs from Sass & Belle, such as a shark, a narwhal, a unicorn and a polar bear, and larger woven rugs from AFKliving with a rainbow, a race track, a fawn or the alphabet. Below you can read which rug suits your child's room, how to place it safely and how to keep it clean.
The Sass & Belle animal rugs
The Sass & Belle rugs are made of cotton and shaped like a cheerful character. They are compact, which makes them ideal next to the cot, in front of the changing table or in a reading corner. Choose from:
- Animals: Shelby the shark in grey (about 72 x 53 cm), Alma the narwhal in ice blue (about 75 x 49 cm), Nanook the polar bear in white (about 54 x 57 cm), Barney the dog in black and white (about 70 x 51 cm) and a fluffy giraffe in beige and brown (about 57 x 80 cm).
- Fairytale: Betty the unicorn in white and pink (about 60 x 64 cm) and Freya the swan in white with powder pink (about 65 x 73 cm).
- Calm: the Sweet Dreams star in grey (about 70 x 67 cm) and the Earth Rainbow with boho tassels in muted earthy tones (about 50 x 60 cm).
Please note: the Sass & Belle rugs have no anti-slip backing. They are therefore not suitable for the bathroom or wet floors.
The AFKliving woven rugs
At AFKliving you will find larger rugs for the middle of the room or the play corner:
- Arc en Ciel, Circuit and Fawn: about 80 x 150 cm, made of polypropylene (also called synthetic wool). This material is sturdy, easy to keep clean, water-repellent and colourfast, and the rugs are anti-dust-mite and carry the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 label. The Circuit rug with a race track doubles as a play mat for toy cars.
- Alphabet: a rug of about 100 x 140 cm in cotton, hand-woven and hand-coloured, in grey with the alphabet. Fun and educational at the same time.
Nursery rug: which one suits you?
- Small room or corner: a Sass & Belle animal rug next to the cot or in front of the wardrobe.
- Large play area: an 80 x 150 cm AFKliving rug, where your child can sit and play comfortably.
- Car fan: the Circuit rug, for racing straight away.
- Calm, natural style: the Fawn rug, the Earth Rainbow or the grey star.
- Cheerful and colourful: the Arc en Ciel rainbow or the unicorn.
Placing it safely
A loose rug can slide on a smooth floor, especially when your child runs across it. So put an anti-slip mat under the rug, or place it on carpet or somewhere it will not move. Make sure the edges lie flat, so nobody trips over them. Do not place small rugs at the top of the stairs or in the bathroom. A soft rug is lovely to play on, but do not let a baby sleep on it unsupervised.
Cleaning and care
Vacuum the rug regularly, without rubbing, to remove dust and crumbs. Do not use a hard brush. Treat stains as soon as possible: dab with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, and do not rub. Never pull a loose thread, but carefully cut it off. Wash the cotton Alphabet rug by hand in lukewarm water. For the cotton animal rugs, always check the label. Let a rug dry flat after cleaning.
Atmosphere in the nursery
A rug is one of the easiest ways to make a child's room cosy. It dampens sound, feels warm under bare feet and adds colour. Combine a rug with other accessories in the same style. Think of decorative cushions and a cheerful garland on the wall, storage baskets for the toys and a night light for a soft glow in the evening. You will find everything for the room under nursery.
A place to play
On a soft rug your child sits comfortably to build, do puzzles or play with toy cars. For the youngest ones who still lie on their tummy or are learning to roll, a thick play mat with a play arch is extra nice. That way every age has its own soft play spot. Put a basket of toys next to it, and tidying up after play is done in no time. A fixed play spot on the rug also helps keep toys from spreading all over the room.
Nursery rug: tips for choosing
Measure the space where the rug will go, and leave about 30 to 50 cm free to the walls or furniture, so the room looks calm. For a playroom, choose a sturdy material that is easy to keep clean, and next to the bed something soft for bare feet in the morning. Let your child help choose: a rug with their favourite animal quickly becomes a favourite spot in the room.
