A well-fitting fitted sheet is the basis of every baby bed. It sits tightly around the mattress, feels soft and is easy to change. At Tiny Giggles you will find fitted sheets for the travel cradle, the cradle and the cot, from brands such as BimbiDreams, Bamboom, Jollein, Meyco and Babyono. There are fitted sheets of organic cotton, bamboo and jersey, and waterproof fitted sheets that protect the mattress. Below you can read which size you need and what to look out for.
Which fitted sheet size do you need?
Always measure your mattress first. The fitted sheet must fit exactly: not too loose, so it can't shift, and not too tight, so the mattress doesn't bend. These are the sizes in our collection:
- 40 x 75 cm: for the travel cradle, such as the Babyono bamboo jersey fitted sheets (set of two).
- 40 x 80 cm: for the cradle, such as the Bamboom cradle sheets (2-pack) and the BimbiDreams organic cotton fitted sheets. More choice is under cradle sheets.
- 60 x 120 cm: the standard size for the cot, from Bamboom, BimbiDreams, Jollein and Meyco.
- 70 x 140 cm: for the larger cot or junior bed, from BimbiDreams among others.
- 80 x 140 cm: the BimbiDreams Cottage fitted sheet of knitted organic cotton.
For beds with a standard mattress of 60 x 120 or 70 x 140 cm, there's also plenty of choice under crib sheets.
Materials
- Organic cotton: the BimbiDreams fitted sheets are made of organic cotton, sometimes with 4% elastane for a snug fit. Washable at 30°C.
- Knitted organic cotton: the BimbiDreams Cottage and Wonderland fitted sheets have a soft, knitted texture.
- Bamboo: the Bamboom fitted sheets are made of 100% organic bamboo, which provides good moisture regulation. The Babyono travel cradle sheets are made of 100% bamboo jersey.
- Jersey cotton: the Jollein fitted sheets are made of 100% jersey cotton, the Blush Pink even of extra thick double jersey. They absorb moisture well and are lovely and soft. Washable at 40°C.
Waterproof fitted sheets and mattress protectors
A leaking nappy or a little spit-up happens quickly. With a waterproof fitted sheet you protect the mattress, so it stays fresh and hygienic.
- Jollein terry waterproof fitted sheet (60 x 120 cm): 100% cotton terry, waterproof but breathable, absorbs moisture well and is washable at 40°C.
- Meyco molton waterproof fitted sheet (60 x 120 and 70 x 140/150 cm): 100% cotton with a PU underlayer, waterproof but breathable. Washable at 95°C, so extra hygienic, and suitable for cool tumble drying.
- Meyco nub mattress protector (60 x 120 cm): not a fitted sheet, but a protector you place with the nubs down between the slatted base and the mattress. That keeps the mattress protected.
You can use a waterproof fitted sheet directly on the mattress, or underneath with a soft cotton fitted sheet on top.
Safe sleep
A tight fitted sheet is part of a safe sleeping place. In the first year, put nothing loose in the cot: no pillow, duvet, blanket, cuddly toy or bumper. A baby sleeping bag keeps your baby warm without loose blankets. After changing, always check that the fitted sheet sits firmly around all corners of the mattress and doesn't come loose anywhere, and always choose the size that exactly fits your mattress.
How many fitted sheets do you need?
Count on at least three fitted sheets per bed: one on the mattress, one in the wash and one spare in case something happens at night. A waterproof fitted sheet or mattress protector is a nice addition. Using a cradle and later a cot? Then you'll need fitted sheets for both sizes. The 2-packs from Bamboom (cradle), Babyono (travel cradle) and Jollein (cot) are handy.
Colours and prints
Fitted sheets come in calm plain colours, such as ivory, pink, green and blue from BimbiDreams, but also with prints. Think of the Bamboom prints Magnolia, Papavero and Eucalyptus, the Babyono prints Feathers, Forest and Stardust, and the BimbiDreams themes Flamingo, Zebra, Happy, Happy Days, Indian, Planet Green and Planet Pink. That way the bed matches the rest of the kids' room.
Making the bed quickly
Changing a fitted sheet is easiest if you start at the corners. First pull the two corners at the head end over the mattress, then the two at the foot end. Smooth the sheet with your hand so there are no creases or loose parts. Tip for the night: keep a clean sheet ready next to the cot. Some parents even make up two layers: a waterproof sheet with a cotton sheet on top, and the same again underneath. If something goes wrong, you simply pull off the top layer and the bed is ready again.
Washing and changing
Always wash a new fitted sheet before using it. Follow the care label: the BimbiDreams fitted sheets at a maximum of 30°C, the Jollein and Babyono fitted sheets at 40°C, and the Meyco molton fitted sheets even at 95°C. Use a mild detergent and no fabric softener, especially with waterproof fitted sheets. Change the fitted sheet at least once a week, and more often if something has leaked.
More bedding
All sheets together are under sheets. Is your child getting bigger and sleeping in a toddler bed? Then you'll find covers under duvet covers for when your child is old enough for a duvet. More from the brands is under BimbiDreams and Bamboom.
