Sneakers for babies
The Baby Boy sneakers from Tiny Giggles Essentials are white, with gold, silver or black stripes. They have a PU leather upper, a cotton insole, a sturdy Vibram outsole and Velcro, so they go on easily and you can tighten or loosen them. Size 3-6 months (11 cm). Why soft soles?
Baby feet are still developing. As long as your baby is not walking independently, shoes are mainly for keeping the feet warm and protected. Learning to walk works best indoors barefoot or in soft slippers, so your baby feels the floor and the foot muscles get stronger. Once your child walks outdoors, a sturdier shoe with a good sole is nice.
When does your baby need shoes?
In the first months a baby does not really need shoes: socks or slippers keep the feet warm enough. Baby shoes are then mainly fun for a party, a family photo or a pram walk on a chilly day. Once your baby starts crawling and pulling up, slippers with a leather sole help with grip on a smooth floor. Only when your child walks outdoors independently is a proper walking shoe with a sturdier sole needed.
Handmade leather from Orangenkinder
The Orangenkinder slippers are handmade in Germany. The nappa leather is plant-tanned and chrome-free, which makes it extra soft and breathable, and kinder to delicate baby skin. By season
In summer, airy cotton slip-ons are nice: they breathe well, so little feet do not get too warm. In autumn and winter, leather slippers keep feet warm indoors. On cold days, combine them with thick socks, but make sure the slippers do not become too tight. Outdoors in the pram, a footmuff or blanket keeps feet extra warm.
The right size
Measure your baby's foot from heel to big toe, preferably at the end of the day. Add about 1 to 1.5 cm for growth and room to move. EN FANT, for example, recommends a size 15 mm larger than the foot. Shoes that are too tight pinch growing toes, shoes that are too big slip off. Baby feet grow fast: check the size every few months.
Easy on and off
Baby feet like to curl up when you put on a shoe. Velcro and an elastic opening make it a lot easier. Put the shoe on while your baby sits on your lap, open it fully and slide the foot in calmly. Then check that the toes are not curled over, and look for red pressure marks after taking the shoes off: babies cannot tell you when a shoe pinches.
Care
Wipe leather slippers clean with a damp cloth and let them air dry, not on a radiator. A little leather care keeps the leather supple. Brush cotton slip-ons or clean them with a damp cloth; check the label of each product.
Combining
