Why a pacifier clip?

Every parent knows it: the dummy falls on the pavement, in the sand or under the sofa, and needs cleaning before your baby can have it again. With this handy holder you attach the dummy to your baby's clothes. If it falls out of their mouth, it stays hanging and is right there when you need it. That saves searching, cleaning and spare dummies. It is also a cute accessory that goes with your little one's outfit.

Heimess clips with wooden beads

The Heimess chains are made of wooden beads with a metal clip and are about 21 cm long. They come in lots of cheerful versions, such as an elephant, penguin, ladybird, fish, a racing car, a football, a pink heart and calm combinations of blue, grey and white or pink, grey and white. The ladybird is made of untreated wood.

Tiny Giggles Essentials clips

Our own clips come in two kinds. The fabric version has a nylon ribbon of about 28 cm, a BPA- and PVC-free plastic clip and adjustable press studs, so it fits most dummies. Choose from prints such as dinosaurs, rabbits, pink flamingos, colourful dots, a nautical theme, a herringbone pattern, a moustache or the text "I love mama en papa". There are also versions with wooden and silicone beads and a wooden clip, in aqua and pink.

Cam Cam Copenhagen pacifier clip

The Cam Cam Copenhagen holder is made of soft, GOTS-certified organic cotton with a clip of natural wood and nickel-free metal, and a rubber ring for the dummy. It is 20 cm long and has a lovely Pressed Leaves print in white and blue.

This collection also includes the pacifier cloth by Sophie la Girafe: a 30 x 30 cm organic cotton cloth you attach the dummy to, so your baby has something soft to hold.

Using a pacifier clip safely

Handy, but always use it the right way. A few important tips for your baby's safety:

• Always attach it to clothing at chest height, never around the neck or wrist, and never to the cot or pram.
• Remove it when your baby goes to sleep and when your baby is unsupervised.
• Never make it longer and do not tie anything to it.
• Check it before every use: are the clip, beads and seams still secure? If anything is damaged or loose, replace it.
• Use it only for the dummy, not for toys or a teether.

Cleaning a pacifier clip

Milk, saliva and sometimes food get on it, so clean it regularly. Wash a fabric version by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and let it dry well. Wipe wooden beads with a damp cloth; do not soak wood in water for long and do not put it in the dishwasher or steriliser. The Sophie la Girafe pacifier cloth can go in the washing machine at 30 °C. For the dummy itself, use a small teat brush.

Handy: more than one

Many parents have more than one: one in the changing bag, one at home and a spare for when one is in the wash. That way you always have a clean one at hand. Choose, for example, a fabric one for home and a wooden one for on the go, or one in a colour that matches the outfit.

When the teeth come

Around 4 to 6 months, babies start putting everything in their mouth. The clip is not a teething toy: do not let your baby chew on the beads or the clip. For chewing, give your baby a real teether instead. You will find them among our teethers and teething toys. For the pram, stroller toys are more suitable.

Getting used to a dummy

Not every baby wants a dummy straight away, and that is completely fine. If you do use one, offer it when your baby is restless or needs to suck to settle. Keep a few spare dummies clean and dry in a box in the changing bag. Check regularly that the dummy is intact and replace it if it has cracks or the material becomes sticky. That way it stays pleasant and safe for your baby.

They are suitable from birth. Always use them under supervision and remove them when your baby sleeps.

How long is a pacifier clip?
