A good nappy bag is the heart of every outing. Choose a bag with enough compartments, so nappies, wipes, a bottle and a set of clean clothes each have their own place. Many nappy bags have a changing mat, an insulated pocket for bottles and hooks to attach them to the pram. A backpack model keeps your hands free, a shoulder bag opens quickly. Keep a fixed basic set in the bag and top it up straight after every outing, so you are always ready.
With your baby close to you, your hands are free and your little one feels safe. Under baby carriers you will find carriers with a sturdy hip belt and shoulder straps, easy to put on. In a carrier or wrap, your baby's face must always be visible and free, with the chin off the chest and the back well supported. On warm days, do not put a cloth over the pram: it can quickly get too hot underneath and too little fresh air reaches your baby. Use the hood, a parasol or find the shade instead. Do not hang heavy bags on the handlebar, so the pram cannot tip over. Only use a pacifier clip when your baby is awake and remove it at sleep time. In the car, your baby always sits in an approved car seat.
On cold days, dress your baby in layers and put a blanket over their legs in the pram. A hat keeps their head warm. Feel the back of their neck to check your baby is not too warm or too cold. On warm days, choose airy clothing, a sun hat and shade, and offer your baby drinks more often. A muslin cloth is then ideal as a light blanket.
The first time heading out with your newborn can feel exciting. Start with a short walk nearby, at a moment when your baby has just been fed. That way you calmly learn what you really need and what can stay at home. After a few times you know exactly what goes in the nappy bag, and going out becomes a lovely habit. Fresh air and the calm of a walk do you both good.
