Young children's skin is thin and sensitive, and burns faster than adult skin. A sun hat with a brim gives shade on the face and neck, exactly the places that are often in the sun. On the beach, at the playground or on a walk in the pushchair, a hat is a must. A hat doesn't replace sun cream or shade, but it is an important part of good sun protection. A light hat also keeps the head cooler than when the sun shines straight on it. Start early, and putting on a hat becomes as normal as putting on shoes.
The Nordic Hat SPF 50 by Nordic Label is made of 100% cotton and comes in sizes 0-1 year and 1-2 years. Choose from calm colours: Illusion Blue, Off White, Pale Dogwood, Rose, Total Eclipse and White Skye. The Nordic Reversible Hat SPF 50 is reversible, so it is two hats in one. The Denim version combines denim with blue and white stripes and comes in 0-1, 1-2 and 2-4 years. Pale Dogwood combines blue with pink and a floral pattern, in 1-2 years (48 cm circumference) and 2-4 years (50 cm circumference). All Nordic Label hats can be washed at 30°C and must not be tumble dried.
The Lässig sun hats are made of 100% recycled polyester, with UV protection 80. They are reversible: the outside has a playful print, the inside is plain. They tie under the chin. Choose from Block Stripes in Milky/Blue or Milky/Peach, Fish in Light Pink, Sea Animals in Milky and Seahorse or Whale in Caramel. The sizes are 46/49 (6 to 18 months) and 50/51 (18 to 36 months). Machine washable at 30°C on a delicate cycle, not in the tumble dryer.
The FlapJackKids sun hats are reversible, so you get two looks in one hat. They are soft and lightweight and have UPF 50+. The chin straps are reversible too and go through the eyelets of the hat. Choose from Dino, Sailor/Whale, Narwhal/Starfish, Rainbow/Unicorn and Butterfly/Flowers. There are two sizes: Small for 6 months to 2 years (51 cm circumference) and Medium for 2 to 4 years (54 cm circumference).
Measure your child's head circumference with a soft tape measure, just above the eyebrows and over the ears. Compare that with the circumference of the hat. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one: a child's head grows fast, and a hat with chin straps still stays in place. A well-fitting hat doesn't slip over the eyes and doesn't pinch. Let your child try the hat on at home first, so they get used to how it feels. Children often keep a hat on longer if they were allowed to choose it themselves. For the age sizes of Nordic Label and Lässig, the age is a guide; if in doubt, check the circumference.
Chin straps and ties keep the hat in place, but never let your little one sleep with them. Take the hat off when your child goes to sleep, in the pushchair, the cot or the car seat, and don't leave them unattended wearing a hat with straps. Apply children's sun cream to uncovered skin, seek shade in the afternoon and make sure your child drinks enough. Babies under one year should be kept out of direct sun as much as possible.
Wash the hat regularly, especially after a day at the beach with sand, salt water and sun cream. The Nordic Label and Lässig hats can be washed at 30°C, Lässig on a delicate cycle. Neither may go in the tumble dryer. Always follow the care label. After washing, gently reshape the hat and let it dry flat or over a bowl, so the brim keeps its shape.
