Drinking through a straw is a treat for many children, and it's also a handy step between the bottle and the open cup. At Tiny Giggles you'll find reusable silicone straws from Minikoioi. They are soft, flexible and free from BPA, PVC and phthalates, and suitable from 9 months. Choose from sets in blue or pink, or a mixed set in cheerful colours. Below you can read what makes them special, how to use them and how to keep them clean.
Minikoioi Flexi Straws
The Minikoioi Flexi Straws are made of 100% food-safe silicone. The material is soft and bendy, instead of hard plastic or stainless steel. That makes them suitable for the very youngest, from 9 months, and for children who are just learning to drink through a straw. Adults like using them too. They are sturdy and can take a knock, and because you use them again and again, you no longer need disposable ones.
There are four sets:
- Blue, set of 2: two blue straws, with a small brush to clean them.
- Pink, set of 2: two pink straws, with a small brush to clean them.
- Mix Set Boy: four straws in green, blue, grey and dark pink.
- Mix Set Girl: four straws in green, grey, dark pink and pink.
All products from this brand are under Minikoioi.
Why a silicone straw?
- Soft: silicone is flexible, so it feels comfortable in the mouth.
- Safe material: free from BPA, PVC and phthalates.
- Reusable: you use them again and again, which is better for the environment than disposables.
- Colourful: with their own colour, every child knows which one is theirs.
Learning to drink through a straw
Many children learn to drink through a straw around their first birthday. Here's how to help your child get started:
- Start small: put the straw in a cup with just a little water, so your child gets a result quickly.
- Show them: children learn a lot by copying. Drink through a straw yourself too.
- Choose a stable cup: a cup that doesn't tip over easily makes it easier. See kids' cups and mugs.
- Be patient: it can take a while before your child masters the sucking motion. Practise at calm moments.
Prefer a bottle with a built-in straw for on the go? Then see the bottles with straw or all kids' water bottles.
Spout cup, open cup or cup with a straw?
Every way of drinking has its own moment. A spout cup is handy for the very youngest, because little spills out. An open cup trains mouth movements and belongs to grown-up drinking at the table. A cup with a straw sits nicely in between: your child learns to suck and swallow, and the cup doesn't need to be tilted. Many parents alternate: an open cup at home, a drink bottle on the go and a straw for a smoothie. That way your child playfully learns different ways of drinking.
Cleaning
It's best to clean a straw straight after use, before juice or milk can dry. Please note: the Minikoioi straws are not dishwasher safe and cannot be boiled or sterilised. Wash them by hand in warm soapy water:
- Rinse the straw with warm water straight after use.
- Run a brush through it to clean the inside properly. The sets of 2 come with a brush; otherwise you'll find one under bottle brushes.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Let it dry upright or hanging, so no water stays inside.
That way they stay fresh and you can use them for a long time. Thanks to the cheerful colours, they're also easy to find in the kitchen drawer or the changing bag.
Using them safely
Always let your child drink through a straw while seated and supervised, not while walking around or playing. Is your little one teething? Then pay close attention: if a child bites hard on the straw and pulls on it, it can get damaged. Check them regularly and replace them if they show cracks or bite marks.
Handy for every moment
- At the table: a straw in the cup at breakfast or lunch.
- Smoothies and yoghurt drinks: with a straw your child can easily drink slightly thicker drinks too.
- On the go: take one along in a snack box or bag, so your child can use their own in a restaurant or when visiting.
- Parties: cheerful colours make a children's party or birthday even more fun.
Everything for mealtime
Combine them with a kids' dinnerware set, a few mealtime bibs and handy snack boxes and fruit containers. Everything for mealtime is under mealtime.
More sustainable drinking
Disposable straws are used once and then thrown away. With reusable silicone ones it's different: you wash them and use them again. That way you don't need to buy new ones for every party or outing. Keep them together with the brush in a fixed place in the kitchen drawer, so you always have them to hand.
A fun extra
A set of straws is a fun and affordable extra with a gift, for example together with a kids' cup or a kids' dinnerware set. Or give a Mix Set to brothers and sisters, so everyone has their own colour. We are happy to gift-wrap your present.
