Sustainable materials and environmental awareness
Orangenkinder was founded by Verena, a mother who was looking for baby shoes that were both ecological and beautiful.
All slippers from Orangenkinder are manufactured under strict, socially fair and ecological conditions in our factory in Bavaria - made in Germany. For our slippers, we only use vegetable-tanned, chrome-free leather from Germany, from IVN-certified tanners. This ensures a unique wearing comfort and allows small children's feet to feel as if they are walking barefoot - a second, protective skin for sensitive children's feet without hindering growth. By the way, most of our slippers are ECARF-certified and therefore ideal for people with allergies.
During production, we try to avoid waste as much as possible. Leftover leather is processed into doll shoes or keychains. Cardboard boxes are reused where possible or, where possible, punched into cardboard hangers. There is no unnecessary packaging.
Orangenkinder and ECARF – allergen-free children's shoes
The leather used in our children's shoes carries the ECARF quality mark, which is particularly important to us because:
- ECARF test specific learning and shoes, as a large part of you suffers from a chrome allergy - often without knowing it. This is a contact allergy, but if you Orangenkinder if you wear shoes, you don't have to worry about exposure to chrome.
- ECARF specifies strict limits for the following ingredients (heavy metals) in leather processing: formaldehyde, dimethyl fumarate, nickel, cobalt, and many more.
- According to the ECARF Institute, a shoe that is chrome-free is also allergy-friendly.
- Chrome tanned leather is therefore out of the question for us and is not used by our Orangenkinder shoes
Made in Germany - ecological and fair production in Franconia
Orangenkinder leather and boiled wool slippers have been handmade with great attention to detail in Franconia for almost 18 years. We pay a lot of attention to sustainable production processes and the use of ecologically responsible materials, especially leather and wool from Orangenkinder. The production takes place in Bavaria, in the Franconian town of Oberreichenbach, near Herzogenaurach. A former PUMA hall is the location of our factory and has become the site for our production. We strictly ensure that our Orangenkinder-items are produced according to socially fair criteria and ecologically sustainable environmental aspects of leather and shoe production. You can see and feel the result especially in your personal Orangenkinder shoes made of boiled leather or wool.
Natural leather and its natural characteristics
Orangenkinder leather shoes fit like a second skin on your agile feet. And just like your skin is different for all of you, our Orangenkinder leather shoes also differ from each other.
The one shoe of Orangenkinder is the other not. Just like you. By choosing natural, organic leather we experience enormous ecological benefits in the production of our products - you can see and feel that too. Our leather is not re-embossed, it looks as nature and the environment shape it. No chemical sealing by plastics, no falsification and thus a natural raw material. However, this also means that you can see characteristics on the leather surface that occur naturally, such as mosquito bites, scars, and the natural surface texture of different body parts. Smooth leather, for example, is more common in the back part of the animal and grained leather in the flex areas on the belly and the joints.
Our leather is also completely compostable! You could throw it in your compost and it would break down after some time.
Orangenkinder shoes and their colors
Orangenkinder-shoes make an impression with the large selection of bright colors and patterns. The colors of our leather are synthetic and harmless. Unfortunately, plant-based colors are not lightfast and fade quickly when worn under the influence of light.
But not only our wide color assortment benefits from this ecological approach, but also your health and tolerance for our products. When selecting our raw materials in production, we pay strict attention to environmental friendliness. The leather of our Orangenkinder is regularly and critically tested for heavy metals and other ingredients.
