School supplies by age
Reception: a small backpack, a lunch box they can open themselves, a sippy cup with a straw and perhaps spare clothes. A pencil case is often not needed yet. Early primary years: a medium backpack, a pencil case with pencils, eraser and sharpener, and a gym bag. Upper primary: a larger backpack, a case with more compartments for pens, highlighters and a set square, and often a planner. Secondary school: a sturdy backpack, sometimes with a laptop compartment, and a roomy pencil case.
How do you choose the right pencil case?
- Number of compartments: young children are fine with one; older children keep things organised better with two or three.
- Size: a 30 cm ruler only fits in a large, flat case.
- Material: polyester is light and sturdy; faux leather wipes clean extra easily.
- Zip: a big, sturdy zip opens more easily for small hands.
School supplies for the first day
The first day of school is exciting. Let your child help choose: a backpack or pencil case your child likes is carried with pride. Practise opening the lunch box, drink bottle and backpack zip at home. Pack the bag together the evening before, so there is no rush in the morning. That way your child starts the new adventure relaxed.
School supplies for left-handed children
Is your child left-handed? Then pay particular attention to scissors, sharpener and pen. There are special left-handed scissors and sharpeners that turn the other way. For the pencil case it makes little difference; a case with a wide opening or several compartments is handy, so everything is easy to reach with either hand.
Sustainable school supplies

Check the supplies list
