Fitted sheets and sheets
A well-fitting fitted sheet is the basis of every bed. Under sheets you will find everything to make up the mattress: fitted sheets that fit snugly around the mattress, crib sheets and cradle sheets for the smallest beds. Always check the size of your mattress, so the sheet fits tightly and cannot shift. It is handy to have at least two or three, so you always have a clean sheet ready if something happens at night.
Baby blankets
A soft blanket is one of the most used items in the first years. Under baby blankets you will find knitted blankets, waffle blankets, muslin blankets and teddy blankets for the crib, the cot, the pram or the playpen. Choose a light blanket for summer and a warmer one for cold days. A baby blanket is also a popular baby gift, especially with a lovely print or in a soft colour.
Baby sleeping bags
For many parents, a sleeping bag is the easiest and safest way to keep their baby warm. Your little one cannot kick off the covers and cannot slide under a blanket. Under baby sleeping bags you will find sleeping bags in different lengths and thicknesses, for summer and winter. Choose a sleeping bag that matches your child's length and the temperature in the bedroom.
Duvet covers and pillowcases
Is your child going to sleep under a duvet, usually around the move to a toddler bed? Safe sleep advice recommends not putting anything loose in the cot during the first year, so do not use a cot bumper in the cot while your baby sleeps, but as decoration in the room. A baby nest is a cosy spot for the daytime: place it on the floor, always stay with your baby and do not let them sleep in it.
How to make the bed safely
For a baby in the first year, an empty cot is safest. Put your baby on their back, on a firm mattress with a snug fitted sheet, and use a sleeping bag. Prefer a sheet and blanket? Then place your baby with their feet against the foot end and tuck the sheet and blanket in firmly, no higher than chest height. Keep pillows, cuddly toys, duvets and cot bumpers out of the cot in the first year. A bedroom temperature of about 16 to 18 degrees is comfortable, and make sure your baby does not get too warm.
What do you need by age?
- Newborn (crib): two or three cradle sheets or fitted sheets, a sleeping bag and a light blanket for the pram.
- From about 4 months (cot): fitted sheets in the size of the cot mattress, a sleeping bag in the right length and a warm blanket for the playpen or outdoors.
- Toddler (toddler bed): fitted sheets for the new mattress and, when your child is ready, a duvet with a cheerful duvet cover.
Materials
Cotton is the most used fabric for bedding: soft, breathable and easy to wash. Organic cotton is grown without chemical pesticides. Muslin is light and airy, which makes it lovely in summer. Bamboo feels extra soft and silky. A teddy or fleece blanket is nice and warm for the pram in winter. Check the care label of each product and choose fabrics that can withstand lots of washes.
Washing and care
Wash new bedding before you use it, so it is softer and any residue from production is gone. Use a mild detergent without perfume and not too much fabric softener, especially with muslin, as it otherwise absorbs moisture less well. Always check the maximum washing temperature on the label. Change the bedding regularly, and more often if your little one has spit up or has a cold.

When can my baby sleep under a blanket or duvet?
In the first year, a sleeping bag is safest. If you use a blanket, tuck it in firmly no higher than chest height. Only use a duvet once your child is a bit older.
