Your baby close to you, with your hands free: that is the joy of a baby wrap. The Mushie Baby Wrap is a stretchy, ergonomic wrap of about 5.40 m long and 45 cm wide. It is made of organic cotton, which feels soft and breathes, so your baby doesn't overheat easily. The wrap has a universal fit, so it fits most parents. Handy: the wrap has a built-in pouch to store it compactly, so you can easily take it anywhere.
Newborn babies often want to be close to their parents. In a wrap, your baby feels your warmth, hears your heartbeat and smells you, just like in the womb. Many babies calm down from that. For you it's practical too: your hands are free to have a drink, do some shopping or play with an older brother or sister. A wrap is also handy in places where a pram is awkward, such as a busy shop, public transport or a forest path.
There are roughly two kinds of wraps. A woven wrap is firm and doesn't stretch. A stretchy wrap, like the one from Mushie, is supple and soft. You tie it on once and can then put your baby in and take them out without retying. That makes a stretchy wrap especially handy in the first months, when your baby often wants to be carried for a while.

Read the instructions carefully before first use and practise tying with a cuddly toy first. Unsure about tying? A babywearing consultant can help you put the wrap on correctly. Check the wrap regularly for wear, and stop using it if the fabric or seams are damaged.
You usually tie a stretchy wrap around your body first, before putting your baby in. Then you place your baby in the crossing panels of the wrap, with the legs in a frog position and the knees higher than the bottom. Spread the fabric well over your baby's back, from knee pit to knee pit, and make sure the head is well supported. Always follow the steps in Mushie's instructions.
How long you carry your baby depends on you both. Start with short moments of a quarter of an hour to half an hour, so you get used to it together. If it goes well, you can carry longer, for example during a walk in the park or a stroll around the neighbourhood. Take regular breaks, take your baby out to stretch and feed, and listen to your own body: back and shoulders need to get used to it too. After a few times, putting it on and carrying come naturally.
Babywearing keeps you warm, as you and the fabric both give off heat. So dress your baby a little lighter than usual, and watch for signs of overheating, such as a red or sweaty head. The breathable organic cotton of the Mushie wrap helps prevent overheating. Outdoors in the cold, wear a coat around you both, and in summer a sun hat for your baby.
Because the Mushie wrap fits in its own pouch, you can easily take it in the changing bag or the pram basket. Wash the wrap in the washing machine on a cold setting. Let it dry well before using or storing it again. After washing, check that the fabric and seams are still intact. A burp cloth on your shoulder saves you from having to wash it after every feed. Soft muslin cloths are ideal for that.
