Baby nests

A baby nest is a soft cushion with a padded edge where your baby can lie snugly. It gives a sense of security, just like a cuddle from mum or dad. At Tiny Giggles you will find the baby nests by BimbiDreams, with a cotton outer and cheerful prints such as Africa, Flamingo, Kenya and Zebra. Lovely for laying your baby down for a while during the day while you are with them, in the living room or in the nursery.

What is a baby nest?

A baby nest is a kind of soft mattress with a raised, padded edge around it. Your baby lies in the middle, surrounded by the soft edge. Many babies like this: it feels a little like the snug feeling in the womb. The nest is light and easy to move, so you can keep your little one close wherever you are, for example in the living room while you cook or fold the washing.

Using a baby nest safely

Safety comes first. Safe sleep organisations advise against letting a baby sleep unsupervised or overnight in a baby nest. So use the nest like this:

• Only use it when you are there and can see your baby.
• Always lay your baby on their back.
• Place the nest on a firm, flat surface such as the floor, not on a raised surface it could fall from.
• Do not put pillows, soft toys or loose blankets in the nest with your baby.
• Keep the nest away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
• Has your baby fallen asleep? Then move them to their own crib or cot.

For sleep, a cot of their own with a firm, flat mattress is safest. Lay your baby on their back with their feet at the foot of the cot, and use a baby sleeping bag or a well tucked-in blanket. Keep the bedroom cool, around 18 °C.

Safe sleep in the first months

In the first months your baby sleeps for most of the day. A few fixed rules help to keep that as safe as possible. Preferably let your baby sleep in their own cot in the parents' bedroom for the first months. Use a firm mattress that fits well, without gaps along the edge. Do not smoke in the house and make sure your baby does not get too warm: feel the back of the neck, which should feel warm and dry. If you are unsure about anything, ask your health visitor or baby clinic.

A quiet spot during the day

During the day you want to keep your little one close. Put the nest on a rug on the floor in the room where you are, so you can always see your baby. That way your baby can lie and look around calmly while you are busy nearby, and you can lift them out quickly for a cuddle or a feed.

The BimbiDreams baby nests

The BimbiDreams baby nests measure about 60 x 85 x 18 cm. The outer is 100% cotton and the filling is polyester. They can be washed at up to 30 °C. They come in four designs:

• Africa: a cheerful, colourful print with animals.
• Flamingo: a playful print with flamingos.
• Kenya: a calm beige design, lovely in a natural nursery.
• Zebra: a blue design with zebras.

BimbiDreams also makes other nursery textiles in the same themes, such as duvet cover sets, cot bumpers, cushions and changing baskets. That way you can complete the room in the same style. You will find more in our bed textiles collection.

What do you use a baby nest for?

• Cuddling and resting: a soft spot to lay your baby down for a moment while you sit with them.
• Visiting: at grandma and grandpa's you instantly have a familiar spot for your baby in the living room.
• Tummy time: lay your baby on their tummy next to the nest under supervision, or use a play mat for tummy time and play.

What to look for in a baby nest

• Firmness: the base should be firm and flat, not soft and sagging.
• Size: a nest of about 60 x 85 cm offers enough room for a newborn.
• Material: a cotton outer is breathable and soft on baby skin.
• Washable: a machine-washable nest is easy to keep fresh.
• Age: the nest is meant for the first months. Once your baby starts to roll over or move around, stop using it.

Washing and caring for a baby nest

Wash the nest regularly at up to 30 °C with a mild detergent and let it dry well before using it again. After washing, check that the seams and filling are still in good condition. Wipe away a little spit-up in between with a damp cloth. You will find more handy products for your baby's daily care in our collection.

Travelling and visiting

The nest is light and easy to take when you travel or visit family. That way your baby has a familiar spot to lie in under supervision during the day. Always bring a safe travel cot for the night, and only use the nest when you are there.

A baby nest as a baby gift

A baby nest is a lovely and special baby gift. Give it together with a soft baby blanket or a sleeping bag for the night. Also tell the new parents how to use the nest safely: only during the day and under supervision. Do not know the gender yet? The calm beige Kenya design suits every nursery, and Africa, Flamingo and Zebra are cheerful choices for parents who love colour. Our wrapping service makes the gift look festive.
