How to trim your baby's nails

1. Choose a calm moment: for example after the bath, when the nails are soft, or while your baby is asleep or feeding calmly.
2. Make sure there's good light: so you can see exactly where the nail ends.
3. Hold the finger firmly: press the fingertip down slightly, away from the nail.
4. Trim in a curve: follow the shape of the fingertip for fingernails. Cut toenails straight across.
5. File afterwards: smooth any sharp edges with a nail file.

Can't do them all at once? No problem. Trim a few nails and do the rest later. You can also work as a team: one holds the baby, the other trims.

How often should you trim baby nails?

Fingernails grow fast. Many parents trim or file them once or twice a week. Toenails grow more slowly and need less frequent attention. Above all, look at the nails themselves: if they're long or sharp, or your baby is scratching, it's time.

Tips for a relaxed trimming moment

• Take your time and stay calm; your baby can sense it when you're rushed.
• Sing a song or talk softly to your baby.
• Only use scissors or clippers made for babies.
• Don't cut too short, so the skin under the nail isn't touched.
• Accidentally nicked the skin? Gently press a clean gauze or cloth on it until it stops.

Cleaning and storage

Wipe the scissors or clipper clean after use. Store them in the protective cover or case, so the tips don't get damaged and nobody can hurt themselves. Keep scissors out of reach of children. A fixed place in a changing table basket means you can always grab them quickly.
