Safe sleep

Safe sleep is the most important thing in the first year. Follow these guidelines:

• First year: put nothing loose in the cot: no pillow, duvet, blanket or bumper. A baby sleeping bag is the safest way to keep your baby warm.
• Bottom sheet: if you use the sheet as a bottom sheet, tuck it in tightly around the mattress so it can't shift or ride up. A fitted sheet stays tight around the mattress by itself.
• Pillow and blanket: only use a pillow and a blanket with a sheet once your child is older. Not sure when? Ask your health visitor for advice.
• On the back: always put your baby to sleep on their back, with their feet at the foot of the cot.

That way the set grows with your child: first as a tightly tucked-in bottom sheet, later as a top sheet with pillowcase.

Choosing crib sheets

What should you look for when choosing crib sheets?

• Size: a crib sheet is bigger than a cradle sheet. For a cradle or bedside crib, choose cradle sheets.
• Material: bamboo and cotton are soft and breathable, lovely for sensitive baby skin.
• Number: with two or three sets you always have a clean one, even if there's an accident at night.
• Style: choose a design that suits the rest of the nursery.

How many sheets do you need?

Babies spit up, drool and nappies sometimes leak. So count on at least two or three sheets per cot, so there's always a clean one ready while the other is in the wash. Many parents combine a few fitted sheets with one or two crib sheets. That way you have the right sheet to hand for every situation. Making the bed

If you use the sheet as a top sheet for an older child, lay the sheet over the mattress, put the blanket on top and fold the sheet back a little over the blanket. Tuck everything in well at the sides and the foot, so the blanket doesn't come higher than your child's chest. Place the pillow at the top of the bed. That way your child lies nice and warm and can still move freely. A soft baby blanket completes the bed.

Washing and care

Wash the sheets before first use, so they're fresh when your little one sleeps in them. Always check the label for the right temperature. Use a mild detergent and not too much fabric softener, so the fabric stays soft and breathable. Preferably let the sheets air dry. Change the bedding regularly, and more often if your child is ill or something has been spilled.

The pillowcase
