What are Yumbox trays?
A Yumbox consists of two parts: a sturdy outer box with a lid and a removable tray with compartments. The tray is the part that holds the food. Because you can buy the tray separately, you can mix and match endlessly. Has your son had enough of his old print, or does the tray look a little worn after a few school years? Then you only replace the tray, and the outer box simply carries on. That way one lunchbox becomes a new one again and again.
The trays are made from food-safe materials and are free from BPA, PVC and phthalates. They measure 22 x 15 x 5 cm, and the print sits on the bottom of the compartments. Every time your child empties a compartment, part of the picture appears. That makes lunch extra fun, especially for children who sometimes leave a little food behind.
Original or Panino: which tray fits your box?
Yumbox makes different models, and the trays are not interchangeable. So check which box you have at home before you choose a new tray.
- Yumbox Original tray: six compartments, five of 118 ml (half a cup) and one small round compartment for a small snack or a dip. Ideal for children who like to eat a little bit of everything.
- Yumbox Panino tray: four compartments, with one large compartment of 470 ml (two cups) that suits sandwiches or a wrap, two compartments of 118 ml and one small round compartment for nuts or a sauce.
An Original tray does not fit in a Panino outer box, and vice versa. Not sure which model you have? Count the compartments in the tray you use now: six compartments means an Original, four compartments means a Panino.
The prints for boys

Why a spare tray is handy
Many parents buy a second tray to make mornings calmer. You fill the spare tray in the evening with vegetables, fruit and a sandwich, put it covered in the fridge and click it into the outer box the next morning. While one tray is in the dishwasher, the other is ready to use. It also helps if you have several children with the same box: with their own print, everyone knows straight away which lunch belongs to whom.
A separate tray is also a nice little gift for a child who already has a Yumbox. Think of a birthday, the start of the school year or a reward after an exciting first week at school.
Lunch ideas per compartment
With the compartments of the Yumbox trays you can easily put together a varied lunch. A few ideas for the Original tray:
- Compartment 1: half a sandwich or a few crackers.
- Compartment 2: cucumber, pepper or cherry tomatoes.
- Compartment 3: pieces of apple, grapes or mandarin.
- Compartment 4: a cube of cheese or a slice of chicken.
- Compartment 5: a handful of raisins or popcorn.
- Round compartment: hummus, a yoghurt dip or a few nuts (depending on age and the school rules).
In the Panino tray the large compartment goes entirely to sandwiches, a wrap or a pasta salad. You fill the smaller compartments with vegetables and fruit. That way your son sees a complete meal at a glance. Small snacks for in between can go separately in one of the snack boxes for boys.
Cleaning and care
The trays can go in the top rack of the dishwasher. Do rinse off leftover sauce or yoghurt first, so nothing dries into the corners. The trays are not suitable for the microwave, so always heat food in another container first. Let the tray dry well before putting it back in the outer box, so everything stays fresh. Store trays you are not using flat in a cupboard so they keep their shape.
